The Missouri State Highway Patrol is looking for troopers. More than 30 are needed to fill vacancies throughout the state.

Highway Patrol Captain Tim Hull says the first step in the process involves filling out an application, with the details available on the Patrol’s web site. He says all are welcome, especially women and minorities.

"We’re encouraging minorities and females to apply for the test in these nine different locations," said Hull in an interview with the Missourinet. "Because we’re always recruiting minorities and females for these positions."

Certain prerequisites exist for those wanting to be state troopers.

"To be eligible the candidates must possess a minimum of 60 college credit hours," said Hull. "Or two years of federal active duty military service with an honorable discharge or two years of post-certified full-time law enforcement experience."

Successful completion of the preliminary requirements lead to further stages.

"There’s a written test, and a physical test, and an oral board interview, a psychological test, and there’s a background check, and a history check on the person that’s very thorough and very extensive," said Hull.

The starting salary for trooper is $3,034 per month while in training; $3,217 per month after six months; and $3,508 per month at two years of service. Benefits include group health insurance and paid retirement.
