St. Louis Cardinal blogs are calling for the team to get Todd Wellemeyer out of the starting rotation after he fell to 7-9 after Sunday’s loss at Philadelphia in which he gave up three home runs.  The Cardinals may be stuck with Wellemeyer while  they figure out their bullpen situation.

Prior to Sunday’s game, the Cardinals recalled Blake Hawksworth up from AAA Memphis and sent down Josh Kinney who allowed six runs in Saturday’s 14-6 loss at Philadelphia.

In addition to trading Chris Perez to Cleveland for Mark DeRosa, the Indians chose Jess Todd as the player to be named later. Todd was last year’s minor league pitcher of the year for the Cardinals’ organization.  Todd was a starter last year, but had 24 saves as the Memphis Redbirds’ closer this year.

As the trade deadline nears, I can’t see the Cardinals making another trade for pitching unless they pulled off something for Rick Ankiel.  In a scenario where they trade Ankiel, the Cardinals have Rasmus, Ludwick and now Holliday in the outfield.  If needed, they could always put Schumaker out there as well with Nick Stavinoha.  With Khalil Greene and Troy Glaus rehabbing in Memphis, they could cover third base come August and Mark DeRosa could play second base.
