A good and bad night for the Kansas City Royals at Fenway as their starter Brian Bannister took a shutout into the eighth inning, before he gave up one run and the Royals lost to the Red Sox, 1-0.

Banniser, in seven plus innings of work, gave up just three hits and struck out seven.  Boston starter Jon Lester was just a bit better as he would give up four hits, striking out eight before handing the ball to closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth.

Gil Meche, who is five and two lifetime against the Red Sox will get the start tonight as the teams play game three of their four game set.  Jon Smoltz will get the start for Boston.  First pitch is 6:10 tonight.

The Royals make another trade to help shore up an infield hit hard by injuries, as they send minor league pitchers Danny Cortes and Derrick Saito, and cash to the Seattle Mariners for infielder Yuniesky Betencourt.  Betencourt will not be joining the Royals right away as he is coming off the 15 day disabled list for a strained left hamstring.  He will finish his rehab assignment at the Royals’ Double A team in Northwest Arkansas.  Kansas City also added to its infield earlier this week when it made a trade for Chicago Cubs infielder Ryan Freel
