New attractions at state fair this year

The Missouri State Fair offers lots of new attractions this year.

Marketing Director Tammie Nichols says there’s a new focus on science and technology this year, including one "experiment" that should be a blast. Missouri will attempt to recapture the world record for the largest Mentos and soda launch, with children doing the honors.

Nichols says the entire exhibit side of the fair will also be expanded.

Other new features include green living booths and presentations, a country living expo that provides gardening tips and more for both urban and rural residents and expanded 4-H programs.

The fair runs Aug. 13 through 22 in Sedalia.

Traditional favorites: concerts, the midway, races, farm animals, tractor pulls and more will also be on tap.

Concert tickets for the fair lineup went on sale Saturday, and Nichols says quality entertainment at an affordable price has something for everyone. Just a few of the musical artists slated to peform include Kansas — a free show, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Shinedown, Brooks & Dunn and many others.

Visit the State Fair Web site to order tickets and for a complete schedule of events.

Mizzou 2008 TV ad wins award

For the second consecutive year a Missouri football TV ad was named best in the nation by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) Board of Directors.

The commercial was called  "We’re Back",   It featured four kids recalling their favorite plays from the season,  before getting a surprise visit from Mizzou standouts Chase Coffman, William Moore and Jeremy Maclin.

I do remember the ad, there was a cute little girl with glasses who talks about Coffman’s patented leap over defenders and says "Are you kidding me?"

Mizzou won the gold award last year for the 2007 football commercial featuring former running back Tony Temple and head coach Gary Pinkel titled "Speed."

I even found the 2006 football commercial which didn’t win any awards and was a little cheesy, but pretty creative for a program that was looking to put butts in the seats.

You can catch the new television spot for the upcoming 2009 Tiger Football season on the front page of mutigers.com .  I like the sound effect when the little tyke runs into Sean Weatherspoon.  It features the new breed of Tigers who all say "it’s their turn to be a Tiger."

Blues prepare for NHL draft

The St. Louis Blues head into the NHL draft with six picks this year including the 17th overall pick on Friday.  It’s likely the Blues will stay away from goaltending this year.

After Chris Mason, who the Blues picked up in a trade from Nashville, took over the starting roll from Manny Legace, the Blues need to turn their focus to other needs.  Depth at goaltending is always a key for teams, but the Blues have some young netminders in the system including St. Louis native and former Maine Black Bear, Ben Bishop.

The Blues have had some success with their first round picks.  Patrik Berglund, a first round pick of the Blues in 2006 ranked fourth on the Blues with 21 goals, becoming the 10th rookie in franchise history to reach the 20-goal milestone. He was fourth among NHL rookies in scoring with 47 points (21 goals, 26 assists) and second in power-play scoring (7-15–22). He led the Blues and ranked second among NHL rookies in plus-minus (+19), posting an even-or-plus rating in 66 of 76 games.

David Perron was the Blues’ first round pick in 2007 and scored 15 goals and had 50 points in 81 games last season.  The left winger also had a goal and an assist in the four playoff games this past season.

TJ Oshie was a plus-minus (+16) this past season.  The former first rounder of 2005 scored 14 goals and had 25 assists in just 57 games and started playing better during the stretch when he was named player of the month in March after scoring four goals and nine assists.

Defensively, the Blues are stacked with former first round picks.  Jeff Woywitka was a first round pick in 2001 by Philadelphia.  He came over to the Blues in a trade with Edmonton along with team captain Eric Brewer, a first round pick in 1997 by the Islanders.  Barret Jackman, Jay McKee, Eric Johnson, Roman Polak, and Carlo Colaicovo are all first round picks with Johnson and Jackman coming up through the Blues’ system.

The first round of the draft will take place on Friday starting at 6pm.  The Blues
pick 17th and rounds 2-7 continue on Saturday at 9am.

Another big day for Pujols

Albert Pujols went 4 for 5 with two home runs including a grand slam that came in an 8 run fourth inning as the Cardinals swept the I-70 series in Kansas City with a 12-5 win.  The Cardinals’ victory gave Tony LaRussa 2,500 wins for his career.

Pujols continued to terrorize Royals’ pitching.  Down 4-3 in the fourth, the Cardinals would send 13 batters to the plate as the Royals would use three pitchers in the inning.  Royals’ starter Gil Meche was charged with nine run in 3.1 innings.  He falls to 4-6 on the year.

Adam Wainwright went six innings striking out eight, but he also gave up five runs on eight innings including home runs to David DeJesus and Jose Guillen.  Pujols’ two blasts went along with another home run from Khalil Greene, his second in two games.

The Cardinals moved 1.5 games ahead of Milwaukee who lost to Detroit.  The Royals are still in fourth place after the Indians were swept by Chicago.

Wizards wilt in heat in exhibition match

The Kansas City Wizards played the Mexican soccer club team Atlas in an exhibition game on Sunday at Hermann Stadium on the campus of St. Louis University under a blazing sun and 93 degree temperatures.

Over 5,200 fans stayed for three hours to watch a 0-0 tie.  Why, I’m still wondering, but things were so bad that the referee stopped the match in each half for a water break.

When asked how the weather affected the players, Wizards coach Curt Onalfo said, "they were probably ready to pass out."  In fact, one of the Wizards needed to leave in the first half from heat exhaustion.
