An organized telephone campaign to convince Governor Nixon to keep Reginald Clemons from being executed has produced dozens of calls to the Governor’s office. A federal court has a stay of execution in place. It could be lifted at any time. Until the stay was issued, Clemons was scheduled to die just after midnight tonight.Nixon spokesman Scott Holste checked the call sheets when the switchboard shut down last night. He says Governor Nixon’s switchboard handled 185 calls on behalf of Clemons yesterday. It also took in 166 calls from people urging the Governor not to make budget cuts in funding for mental health. Holste says the office also has gotten several hundred e-mails about Clemons in recent days, many of them a "form" e-mail. Clemons is to die for his part in the murders of two St.Louis sisters in 19-91. They were raped and their bodies were thrown from a Mississippi River bridge. The body of one of them never was found. One of the other men involved in the incident has been executed. A third is under a death sentence.
