Gil Meche held down the Indians, notching a career high 11 strikeouts while tossing a four hitter shutout over seven innings. The Royals’ offense was explosive, knocking out  three homers, including Alberto Callaspo’s first career grand slam in an 9-0 win Wednesday night.

First, Gil Meche.  He had a tough assignment going up against Carl Pavano who was 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA in his last eight starts.  Meche was on early.  He retired his first seven batters and after a single and a two out error, Meche was able to get out of the third inning with no damage.

In the fourth, Meche struck out the side and ran into troubled in the fifth, but got out of a bases loaded jam.  By then, he had his 9-0 lead.  Cleveland got runners on base, but couldn’t come through when they needed.

There was no problem giving Meche offensive support.  Jose Guillen and Miguel Olivo each homered in the fourth inning and Alberto Callaspo hit his first career grand slam in the fifth ending Pavano’s night after 4.2 innings of work.
