The Royals had an opportunity to put together a nice winning streak with Zack Greinke on the mound Thursday afternoon and Tuesday night’s four run rally, but it was the Indians who spoiled those plans with a 6-5 comeback win Wednesday night.

Now the Royals will settle for a series win if Greinke can continue his dominating pitching in the series finale.  Early on it looked like the Royals were on their way to win.  Gil Meche pitched six innings and allowed just two runs and the Royals were up 4-2 thanks to a three run third that included a two run double from Jose Guillen.

After Cleveland added two in the fourth, the Royals came back with one in the bottom half of the inning when Mike Aviles scored on a wild pitch by Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona.

The Royals bullpen hurt themselves.  After one out singles put runners on first and second, relief pitcher Jamey Wright hit Jamey Carroll and walked Asdrubal Cabrera for a run in the seventh.  Sidney Ponson came on in relief and got a ground ball double play, but Aviles couldn’t get the ball out of his glove and another run scored to tie the game at 4-4.

Then in the eighth, Mark DeRosa doubled with two outs to give the Indians the lead and later scored on a single from Ben Francisco after Robinson Tejada was called on for Ponson.

The Royals are two games out of first place with an afternoon game at 1:10 with Greinke taking on Carl Pavano.  The Royals jump across the state for the first of six with the Cardinals in the I-70 series.
