The major transportation bill of the legislative session has made it to the Governor’s Desk. The Missouri Senate finished work on the House-passed bill this morning….
The bill makes about fifty changes in state transportation law. Among the changes:
–Creation of a drunk driving risk reduction awareness program that allows placement of signs by the state at or near the scene of a drunk driving fatal accident. People can apply to the state transportation department to sponsor a memorial sign. Signs will not be posted for drunk drivers killed in such crashes.
–Allowing motor vehicle dealers to collect sales taxes at the sale site, although buyers can go to state revenue department offices to pay their taxes if they wish.
—A requirement that the Director of Revenue to award fee office contracts through a competitive bidding process.
–Allowing abandoned vehicles left on the roadside to be towed after being left unattended for 24 hours on any highway or freeway outside of urban areas.
–Expanding the Mack’s Creek Law that limits the amount small towns can raise for their municipal budgets through the issuance of speeding tickets.
–Allowing the state to establish fees to be charged shippers of radioactive wastes in or through Missouri.
