Last year’s 2-14 team went through a lot of growing pains, with young players like Glenn Dorsey, Brandon Flowers on the defense and Jamaal Charles and Tyler Thigpen on offense. Now head coach Todd Haley is looking for some veteran leadership to that core group of youngsters.
After this weekend’s trade for 12 year vet Mike Vrabel with New England, the Chiefs will visit with 32 year old Clark Haggans today. Haggans played eight years for Pittsburgh, and last season joined the Arizona Cardinals, where new Chiefs coach Todd Haley coordinated the offense. Haggans had a career high nine sacks back in 2005 with Pittsburgh.
If Haggans signs, that will take care of the Chiefs two outside linebacker positions. On the offensive side, 36 year old wide receiver Bobby Engram was in Kansas City on Tuesday, but didn’t sign with the team.
Engram spent five seasons in Chicago with the Bears and the past eight years in Seattle. 2007 was his best year, when he caught 94 passes for 1,147 yards and six touchdowns. His numbers were down last year, but Seattle was awful. Engram caught 47 passes in 2008.
Engram along with Dwayne Bowe would give Matt Cassel a couple of good options to throw to.
