Today is the first official workout for the Kansas City Royals at their training complex in Surprise, Arizona.  The Royals have agreed to a contract with their new first basemen and utility infielder Alberto Callaspo is the lone no-show.

Mike Jacobs, who the Royals acquired in a trade with Florida will add some pop to the lineup.  Jacobs is coming off a 30 home run, 2008.  He and the team avoid arbitration by agreeing to a one year $3.275 million deal.

As far as Callaspo, he got his visa late from his native Venezuela and couldn’t find a seat on any outgoing flights.  He should arrive by today.  Alright, look I know red tape and customs and international travel can be a pain in the neck, but come on.  Albert knew when he left in October that he would need to be back in February.  Why wait until the last minute…in my mind, no excuse.

I’m done venting.  Jose Guillen, as I reported yesterday looking fit said yesterday he plans to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic
