Ryan Ludwick cancelled his flight to Phoenix on Monday knowing his contract would be worked out and he would be avoiding arbitration.  Late Monday, his contract was finalized.  Ludwick signs a one year deal worth $3 million.

That’s quite a bargain for the Cardinals.  I realize Ludwick had a breakout year in which he hit .299 with 37 home runs and 113 RBI, and participated in the All-star game.

You’ll see a motivated Ludwick this year.  If he puts together comparable numbers and proves he can be a consistent player, he’ll cash in next season come contract time and that’s when the Cardinals will have a tough decision.

In other Cardinal news, Jason Isringhausen said he would be willing to come back and compete for the closer’s job, but Tony LaRussa squashed that idea real quick saying he doesn’t think Izzy is an option.

The Cardinals seem content on Chris Perez or Jason Motte.  It is even possible Ryan Franklin could fill that role or Kyle McClellan who at this point is being stretched out as a starter.  He is the back-up plan for Chris Carpenter.

Isringhausen is seven saves shy of 300.  I’m sure he’s looking to reach that milestone and prove to himself that he can still get major league hitters out.  He contends he is healthy once again.  I hope he get his shot with some team.
