Missouri Southern senior goalkeeper Jon Hansen passed away last night (February 8) after collapsing on the court during an intramural basketball game on campus. Hansen, 22, was a native of Wichita, Kansas where he attended Northwest High School.

He was treated at the scene and transported to Freeman Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9 pm CT. Immediate cause of death is unknown with the autopsy to take place today.

Hansen has been the Lions’ starting goalkeeper the past two seasons and was a first-team All-Southwest Soccer Conference selection this year after recording a conference-high 86 saves. He also ranked fourth in the SSC with two shutouts. He finished the year with a 2.85 goals-against-average.

For his career, Hansen has 181 saves in 35 games played, with five shutouts. He ranks in Southern’s top ten in minutes, shutouts and saves.

Hansen is the son of Brad and Jan Hansen. His brother, Jeff, was a former player and assistant coach at Southern, and is the current head women’s soccer coach at Missouri Western State University.

"This is a very sad loss for our family," said head coach Kiley Cirillo. "We’ve lost a great ambassador and great friend. He’s a wonderful young man and is gone well before his time."

More information will be released as it becomes available.
