Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez caught six passes for 98 with one touchdown to help break two of Jerry Rice’s Pro Bowl records and tie him with another in yesterday’s AFC 30-21 loss to the NFC.
Gonzalez broke Rice’s records for catches and receiving and tied the touchdowns mark in the NFL’s all-star game. Rice held the record at 37 catches. Tony now has 39. He now has 590 yards with Rice now a distant 495 yards. Gonzalez caught his fifth touchdown in the Pro Bowl from Peyton Manning on a nice rainbow pass from 19 yards out.
Gonzalez backed off a bit on his comments about waiting out of Kansas City and said he would be willing to see what the Chiefs do with free agency and the draft before deciding where his future should go. Now with the hiring of Todd Haley, Gonzalez is not quite ready to give up on the team he’s been with his entire career, however he did he’s got maybe two years left and has lost all three of his playoff games. As he reaches the end of his career, he now wants a shot at the Super Bowl.
Now, back to the Pro Bowl. This ends the run in Hawaii after 30 years that has been a sellout every year. Next year the game will be played in Miami, the week before the Super Bowl.
First, I don’t think it enhances the game in anyway. If this happened this year, you wouldn’t have seen Larry Fitzgerald with his two touchdown passes. Because it happens before the Super Bowl, it automatically eliminates the players from both Super Bowl teams from participating. The one upside. Can you imagine the South Beach parties after the Pro Bowlers stick around after their game? Could be some good side stories next year.
