Governor Nixon has requested the federal government declare 22 southern Missouri counties disaster areas due to the ice storm nearly two weeks ago.

Nixon also is asking the federal government to waive its normal requirement that local governments provide a 25% match to receive federal assistance. President earlier granted Missouri an emergency disaster declaration in response to Nixon’s initial request. That declaration allows the state to receive federal assistance to offset its recovery costs. The request today would provide assistance for counties and cities.

Nixon gave an update on the effect of the storm in southeast and southern Missouri at the beginning of his address to Missouri county commissioners, meeting at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City.

If granted, Governor Nixon’s request would assist the 22 counties requesting assistance in recovering from the damage caused by this major storm. Those counties are Barry, Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Douglas, Dunklin, Howell, Madison, Mississippi, New Madrid, Oregon, Ozark, Pemiscot, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, Stone, Taney, and Wayne.
