The Missouri Transportation Alliance has wrapped up its first series of public forums throughout the state to discuss regional transportation.
Chairman Bill McKenna says they now prepare for a second round of forums.
Amendment 3 funding for transportation projects ends in 2009, leaving virtually no new money for Missouri’s transportation needs beyond the current system. The alliance hopes the state can develop a new comprehensive transportation vision, based on based on public input.
McKenna says whether new taxation will be necessary depends on what kind of federal funding the state receives from the economic stimulus package.
McKenna says Missouri has made progress since 2002 when the state was listed as having some of the most dangerous roads in the country. In 2006, Missouri led the nation in reducing highway fatalities and a recent report from the trucking industry listed Missouri as as a state having some of the best highways nationwide.
