Missouri’s Medicaid system stands to benefit to the tune of $18-million as a result of a settlement in a national lawsuit against drug maker Eli Lilly and Company.

Missouri joined several other states and the federal government in suing Lilly over allegations that a marketing campaign improperly promoted the anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa. As a result of the promotions, doctors prescribed Zyprexa for children and adolescents, dimentia patients in long-term care facilities, and in unapproved dosage amounts, all of which violated state Medicaid reimbursement rules.

Attorney General Chris Koster the $18-million that will go into Missouri’s Medicaid system is part of a $1.4-billion settlement, nationwide. Koster says that while he’s pleased to announce the settlement, the credit goes to his predecessor in the office – now Governor Jay Nixon.
