MIAA basketball report

The third-ranked Southwest Baptist Bearcats (10-0, 3-0 MIAA) enter the final day of 2008 in sole possession of first place in the MIAA men’s basketball race, and with two games this week will try to stay there as the calendar changes.

SBU will host Truman (5-6, 0-4 MIAA) Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 31), less than 48 hours after handing No. 10 Missouri Southern (12-1, 3-1 MIAA) a 105-65 loss at Meyer Sports Center.

It was the third time in four games the Bearcats surpassed 100 points and the fifth time this season.

The Bulldogs have lost their last six games a streak in which they’ve been held to less than 70 points five times. Truman has shot just 39.9 percent from the field and 64.2 from the foul line.

The Bearcats will then hit the road to face Emporia State (9-2, 3-1 MIAA) Saturday (Jan. 3). The Hornets, who will host Nebraska-Omaha (8-2, 2-1 MIAA) on New Year’s Eve, enter the week having won eight of their last nine games and are 6-0 this season at White Auditorium.

The Southern Lions will try to bounce back from the loss at SBU with a pair of home games — first the Missouri Western Griffons (6-4, 3-1 MIAA) on Wednesday and Pittsburg State (6-5, 1-3 MIAA) Saturday.

Before Christmas, MSSU captured the Puerto Rico Lexmark Holiday Classic championship.

The Griffons come to the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center riding a four-game winning streak, and they have five victories in the last six games after a 1-3 start. Western handed Washburn (7-4, 3-1 MIAA) its first league loss Monday night, 76-72.

Pitt State hosts Northwest Missouri State (5-6, 0-4 MIAA) before going down Highway 171 to Joplin.

The WU Ichabods return to Topeka to host Fort Hays State (8-2, 1-2 MIAA) on Wednesday and Central Missouri (9-2, 2-2 MIAA) Saturday.

Washburn has dropped its last two games since knocking off No. 6 Brigham Young-Hawaii Dec. 18.

The Tigers picked up their first conference win at Northwest Monday night in just their second road game of the season. It was the first time FHSU had downed the Bearcats since joining the MIAA. Fort Hays State hosts Truman Saturday afternoon.

The Mules of UCM made it four straight wins Monday night, but needed overtime to knock off Pitt State, 79-72.

After visiting ESU Wednesday night, UNO travels to Missouri Western. The Mavericks return to action for their first game since an 81-80 overtime loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State at the St. Mary’s (Texas) River City Classic Dec. 21.

NFL news: Rams look to advisors for help, former Chief arrested

Bob Devaney met with reporters yesterday (Bill Greenblatt, UPI) Newly named Rams GM Billy Devaney will have the job of finding the teams next coach.  He’s called upon a committee that will include former players Dan Dierdorf and Marshall Faulk to help as advisors.

Final input will come in from Chip Rosenbloom as well, but ultimately it will be Devaney’s call.  Devaney was with Atlanta when during the hiring process of their coach Mike Smith.

Devaney wouldn’t name other potential candidates other than Winston Moss, linebackers coach at Green Bay who will be in by the end of the week and Jim Haslett who will be considered a finalist.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is naming Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Baltimore defensive coordinator-assistant head coach Rex Ryan, and Minnesota defensive coordinator-assistant head coach Leslie Frazier as potential candidates. All talked with Atlanta and Devaney last year.

Interesting side note.  Rex Ryan is the son of former Bears’ defensive guru Buddy Ryan of the famed 46 defense.  Leslie Frazier played for the Super Bowl team in 1985.  If Frazier would be hired as a head coach, he would be the third current NFL coach to play for the famous 46 defenses.  The other two.  Jeff Fisher of Tennessee and Mike Singletary of San Francisco.

Running back Jamaal Charles of the Chiefs and wide receiver Donnie Avery of the Rams lost out rookie of the year honors to quarterback Matt Ryan of Atlanta, no surprise there.

I was shocked when I heard late yesterday that the Broncos fired vice president and head coach Mike Shananan after 14 years as their head coach.  16-15 against the Chiefs.  Wouldn’t he look good walking up and down the sidelines in Arrowhead?

Former NFL wide receiver Andre Rison arrested for public intoxication in San Antonio.  Paid his $85 fine and went on his way.  Played three years with the Chiefs from 97 to 99.  Must have whooping it up a bit too much after the Tigers overtime win in the Alamo Bowl.

Mules baseball ranked 3rd in D-II preseason poll

15 consecutive NCAA division II post season tournaments.  11 trips to the championship series in the last 15 years including last season, has given reason for the Central Missouri Mules baseball team to get a #3 preseason baseball ranking in the coaches preseason poll.

The Mules went 47-17 last season and lost to #1 ranked Mount Olive in the NCAA championships last year.  They also had that crazy 6-5 19 inning loss to Sonoma State that ended close to three o’clock in the morning.

Their first game February 6 th Mules schedule .

SLU beats UMBC 81-60

Saint Louis freshman forward Willie Reed recorded a career-high 18 points as the Billikens ousted Maryland-Baltimore County 81-60. SLU, which has won six of its last seven, moves to 8-5 overall and 6-1 at home in Chafetz Arena.

UMBC, an NCAA tournament team from a season ago and riding high after a win at Nebraska in its last outing, dips to 6-6.

Tommie Liddell III notched a team-high 19 points for SLU, which recorded its season high with 81 points. Reed’s career-best 18 points came on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor. He also had three blocks and three rebounds. Liddell was 6-of-10 from the field and is just one point shy of breaking into SLU’s all-time top 10 in career scoring.

Tigers rough on Gentlemen

Matt Lawrence scored 18 points and DeMarre Carroll followed with 15 as the Missouri Tigers beat the Gentlemen of Centenary 80-52 on Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena.

Leo Lyons added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Tigers (11-2), who have scored at least 80 points in 13 games this season.   Now, we’ll see how they do this Saturday, a tough road trip at Georgia.

The Gentlemen now 2-11, committed 16 turnovers and shot just 35.4 percent while Mizzou was an effect 56% from the field.
