Governor-elect Jay Nixon (D-MO) leaves open the possibility that some of his spending plans outlined during the just-concluded election campaign might have to be scaled back, delayed, or pur off altogether because of a poor economy.
Following a meeting with legislative leaders, Nixon said he’s going to have to look at revenue estimates before putting together the next budget. He adds it would be premature to start laying out specific spending plans without having the exact numbers and to discuss financial matters with members of the Legislature.
Nixon says his office and the General Assembly will have to work together with the dollars that are available to move the state forward. He concedes the state receives a lot of its income from income and sales taxes, adding those are sensitive to economic trends.
