Warmer, wetter winter forecast

We’ve had our first good taste of colder weather….and some parts of Missouri have seen their first snow. How bad is this winter going to be? Different people read the signs differently. This has been the wettest year in many years in Missouri but that does not mean all of the moisture that could become snow has been used up. This has been one of the coolest years in years in Missouri, but that doesn’t mean we’re facing a cold winter. State climatologist Pat Guinan says seven of the last ten winters have been warmer than average—last year being an exception. He says the latest outlook from the National Climate Prediction Center is for above-normal temperatures for the next three months. But he says "warmer" is a matter of degrees–or maybe just one. He says the center never puts a number on how much above or below it thinks the average temperature will be, meaning that if the average temperature is only a tenth of a degree above normal, the center can claim it made a successful forecast. The Center is forecasting a wetter than usual winter. But Guinan says the LaNina effect that helped create the snow and ice storms last winter is not present this time and that means all bets are off when it comes to this winter’s precipitation

Chiefs pull out road win at Oakland

The Kansas City Chiefs put together a long 16 play scoring drive that started from their own nine yard line that put the Chiefs up 17-10 early in the 4 th quarter en route to a 20-13 win at Oakland over their rival Raiders.

Larry Johnson scored from two yards out to put KC up, then Brandon Flowers recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.  Conner Barth hit his second field goal of the game and the Chiefs opened up a 20-10 lead.

Oakland added a late field goal, but the Chiefs were able to get a first down and run out the clock to preserve the win.   The Raiders tied the game early in the 3 rd quarter when Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen was picked off.  Oakland returned the pick down to the one yard line and went in on the next play.

Thigpen finished 15 of 22 for 162 yards and no TDs.  Larry Johnson grinded out 92 yards on 24 carries with the go ahead score.   Tony Gonzalez had 8 catches for 110 yards.  Gonzalez has the most receptions for any receiver against Oakland.

Rams find another way to lose

Steven Jackson returned for the Rams and rushed for 94 yards on 21 carries, but Marc Bulger was picked off three times as the Rams lose to visiting Miami 16-12.  With the loss, the Rams are now 2-10 on the year.

The Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a pair of Josh Brown field goals on the Rams first two possessions of the game.  The Dolphins answered with a Ronnie Brown touchdown run, but Brown kicked his third field goal of the game to put the Rams up 9-7.

The Dolphins kicked a field goal at the end of the half and then added another field goal midway through the third to go up 13-9.   Bulger was unable to bring the Rams back as each team traded field goals and Bulger was picked off three times in the second half.

After the game Bulger said, "We find ways to lose. We hung in there the first half. We got that corrected, which is good. We played good in all phases at some points, but we struggled at others."
