Two one-time political allies are involved in an increasingly-bitter contest for Attorney General. Republican Michael Gibbons and opponent Chris Koster were Republican colleagues in the state senate until last year when Koster switched parties. Gibbons says the reasons Koster switched parties should concern the public because it raises questions about loyalty to issues.
Gibbons favors the death penalty. He wants to maintain a strong role in consumer protection, to expand the no call list, thinks there should be no limits on campaign donations–but believes the public should know who does the giving. He’s not big on mandatory sentences, says judges should have discretion.
He has little courtroom experience, unlike his opponent who is a former prosecutor. But he thinks political experience is better. Gibbons says his leadership of the senate for the last four years shows he can work with people on a number of tasks and get common sense solutions to problems.
One of Gibbons’ priorities is establishment of a cyber crimes unit in the Attorney General’s Office, and establishment of a statewide system to alert people to internet scams.
