Marc Bulger connected with receiver Donnie Avery on a 3 rd and 13 with a 43 yard pass play, that set up Josh Brown’s 48 yard field goal as time expired to give Jim Haslett and the Rams their first win of 2008, a 19-16 final at Washington.

At the time of Avery’s catch it would have given the Rams about a 32 yard field goal, but lineman Richie Incognito got flagged for jawing at an official and got a 15 yard penalty on the second to last play from scrimmage.

That pushed Brown’s game winner back a bit, and I really thought that would have been the kiss of death to have Brown miss a long field goal after having a chip shot if Incognito would have kept his mouth shut, but that was all put to rest at Brown nailed it right down the middle.

The Redskins took an early 7-0 lead after Stephen Jackson fumbled deep in Rams territory on their second play from scrimmage following a Washington punt that was downed inside the five.  That set up first and goal for the Skins at the one.  Clinton Portis went in on the next play and just like that, St. Louis was down 7-0.

Brown nailed a 51 yarder (his first of four field goals) to pull the Rams to 7-3 in the first quarter and the Rams defense held down Washington and then came up with a big turnover near the end of the half as Adam Carriker tipped a Jason Campbell pass at the line of scrimmage that was caught by an offensive lineman, who fumbled the ball at the Rams 25.  The ball was scooped up by Oshiomongo Atogwe who ran 75 yards for the defensive touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half to give the Rams a 10-3 lead.

Brown would then hit field goals of 25 and 44 in the 3 rd quarter and the Rams led 16-7.  The Redskins who hadn’t committed a turnover all season turned the ball over three times in this game, yet managed to take a 17-16 lead in the 4 th quarter capped by a Portis touchdown with under four minutes to play.  Portis finished with 129 yards and two scores.

Bulger led the Rams back connecting on the 43 yarder to Avery who finished with four catches for 73 yards.  Bulger was 15 of 26 for 136 yards.
