Nicola Cousins, a 5-foot-6 freshman from Cardiff, Wales, logged 11 points in the Bearcats’ first two MIAA matches, both victories last week and Lauren Bamvakais, a goalie with Central Missouri are MIAA soccer players of the week.

Cousins had a part in each goal during SBU’s 3-0 win at Emporia State Thursday (Sept. 11). Cousins assisted on the first and third goals, scored by Rhiane Mitchell, scoring the second herself via a feed from Jayme Ross in the 72nd minute.

In a 6-1 win at Missouri Southern Saturday (Sept. 13), Cousins logged a hat trick, scoring in the 60th, 67th and 75th minute of the match. Her first marker extended SBU’s lead to 2-0, shortly before the Lions would score their only goal.

Cousins, the MIAA leader with 2.33 assists per game, is a graduate of Whitechurch High School.

Bamvakaism, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., back-stopped the Jennies to a pair of conference wins last week.

She made all five of her saves after UCM had taken the lead as the Jennies claimed a 1-0 win at Washburn Saturday (Sept. 13). Four of the stops came in the second half — one of which denied the Lady Blues on a penalty kick by Jessica Mainz.

Bamvakais bounced back from allowing a goal late in the first half which gave Missouri Southern the lead, and held on to allow Central Missouri to rally for a 2-1 overtime win. She made three saves against the Lions.

Bamvakais, who had a 0.49 goals-against average for the week, is a graduate of Cor Jesu Academy
