Numerous laws, passed by the General Assembly, go into effect on Thursday. Among them is one that is important for those wishing to donate their organs and for others awaiting organ donations.

As of Thursday, any Missourian obtaining a new driver’s license or renewing an existing one will have the option of including an organ donor symbol on their licenses or instruction permits. Governor Matt Blunt (R-MO) says this makes it easier to spot an organ donor because of the colorful symbol that will appear on the license.

After August 28th, Missourians will have the option of asking for the colorful organ donor symbol to be placed on their licenses. As things stand now, being signed up for the Organ Donor Registry does not guarantee organs will be donated, because next of kin can step in and overrule the wishes of the deceased.
