Gil Meche shutdown the powerful Yankee offense, and Joakim Soria shut the door as the Royals took the first of a weekend series 4-3 in New York Friday night.
Meche struckout eight in six innings of work, allowing just one run to cross the plate on his watch. Leo Nunez (4-1) picked up the win in relief.
Soria struggled in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but he got Jason Giambi to fly out to center to end it. The save was the All-Star’s 33rd this season.
