Columbia police shut down part of I-70 in Columbia for about 2 hours this afternoon after a man threatened to jump from a pedestrian bridge.

Police spotted the man just after 10:30 a.m., Friday on the outside of the fenced pedestrian bridge over the west bound lanes.

Officers shut down both directions of traffic and began attempts to talk him down. After about an hour and a half, the man moved away from the highway and officials said he was in a position where he would not be injured if he fell.

At that point, police tried to tase him, but missed and the man again retreated out over the interstate. Police were successful on the second attempt and struck the man, which caused him to fall. He went to a local hospital for his injuries.
