The Mississippi River has dropped below flood stage at Cape Girardeau for the first time in weeks. The National Weather Service said the river was above flood stage for most of the last four months and by Monday will be five feet below bankful.

The river briefly dropped below flood stage for a few days in late May and again for several days in early June. The river did crest just barely into the major flooding category in early July, swamping thousands of acres of cropland.
