The National Guard is investigating a breach that endangers personal information about two-thousand of its members. That’s 20% of the National Guard’s strength in Missouri.

Guard spokesman Jamie Melchert says a law enforcement investigation has started, focusing on one individual.  He says the breach was discovered yesterday and appears to be a one-time incident, not an ongoing problem.  He cannot reveal how the breach happened.  Melchert says all of those who might be affected are being notified by mail.

The National Guard has set up a special hotline for Guard members and their families to call with questions about the incident. However he says people should not call the Guard with questions unless they get notices in the mail that their information might be involved.

The hotline number is 888-526-6664, extension 7888.  Deployed Guard members can use the Defense Switching Network at 312-555-9500.

Melchert could not say how long the investigation might continue.
