Rick Ankiel hit his 16 th homer in the first and the Cardinals had a 3-1 lead after two innings, but Cardinals starter Todd Wellemeyer got knocked around by the Mets who scored six runs on twelve hits over five innings and the Cardinals lose 7-4.

Tony LaRussa said that Wellemeyer normally has success in putting away hitters after getting two strikes, but that the Mets hit the ball where the defense wasn’t.

Wellemeyer was fairly satisfied with his appearance as well, again attributing a lot of New York’s hits to finding the holes.

David Wright was 3 for 4 and Carlos Delgado was 3 for 3 to lead the Mets.  Aaron Miles extended his hitting streak to 13 games and Troy Glaus added two hits.
