America’s hunger for energy has Capitol Hill lawmakers talking up what have been called politically safe alternatives to oil – solar, hydro, and wind power – but a controversial energy source is also being discussed – nuclear power.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) splits with some of her Democratic colleagues as she suggests nuclear power has to at least be considered, with private utility companies – not the government – leading the way.

The ever-increasing price of oil has prompted lawmakers to produce numerous pieces of legislation aimed at addressing the current situation. McCaskill says several of these bills contain nuclear components. She adds, “We have to invest in nuclear. We cannot support the energy needs of this country without nuclear as part of the equation.”
