The Cardinals used a seven run second inning to help beat the Astros 8-4 to even up the series at a game apiece. Adam Wainwright pitched five plus innings and had to leave the game with a strained finger. We’ll know more in a couple of days.
First, after skipping batting practice to give themselves a break after Friday’s loss, when the team arrived from Washington at 3:30 in the morning, the Cardinals looked refreshed. Troy Glaus started the big second inning with a homer, and Ryan Ludwick added a three-run shot.
With one out, Adam Kennedy walked and Wainwright followed with a single and then Skip Schumaker tripled to center that landed on Tal’s Hill about 425 feet from home plate to make it 3-0. Brian Barton doubled in Schumaker and Albert Pujols was walked intentionally before Ludwick hit is three run homer, his 14 th on the year to make the score 7-0.
As far as Wainwright, he wins for the third time this year against Houston, as he improved his record to 6-3. Wainwright said he felt tightness in his middle finger on his throwing hand before the game and it worsened by the sixth. He’s hoping that with not a lot swelling, he’ll be able to make his next start.
