Governor Blunt dedicated the new Lewis and Clark Trailhead Monument in front of a host of on-lookers yesterday. The event included live music, historical re-enactors, and an appearance by Mayor John Landwehr. The dedication was the final stop on Governor Blunt’s Show-Me Tourism Tour, a 3 day RV tour of Missouri state parks and historical sites to promote Missouri tourism, in hopes that Missourians will save money in light of skyrocketing gas prices and spend their summer vacations close to home.
The monument consists of bronze statues of Lewis, Clark, George Drouillard, York, and a Newfoundland dog named Seaman. The trailhead and the monument will connect the Katy Trail to the Capitol and the greenway trail network once the Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge is completed. It is located next to the Capitol near the corner of Jefferson Street and Capitol Avenue.
