Wainwright paints the corner with his fastball (Bill Greenblatt, UPI) Adam Wainwright tied a career high eight strikeouts over eight innings as he beat a red hot hitting Houston Astros club 6-1 at Busch Stadium.

Wainwright says he has a lot of confidence in his fastball and said it’s a shame he can’t pitch like this every game, but he’s been by far, not only the best pitcher in the Cardinals rotation, but quickly becoming one of the top starters in all of baseball.

Wainwright is now 5-2 with a 2.86 ERA.

The Cardinals jumped on Astros’ starter Wandy Rodriquez in the first inning scoring three runs and batting around the order.  Rodriquez walked in a run, and another scored on a wild pitch, plus Yadier Molina brought in another run in that first.

Molina and Cesar Izturis each drove in two runs.  Molina also had two hits, along with Brian Barton and Brendan Ryan.

Wainwright talks about last night’s performance.
