Despite the outstanding relief pitching of Alex Kent and Chris Matlock, the Central Missouri Mules lost 6-5, 19-inning marathon game to Sonoma State, in a Division II World Series game that ended just before 3 a.m. this morning. The game, lasted 6 hours and 45 minutes, the longest in Mules history.

UCM pitching also recorded a school record 22 strikeouts in the contest. Kent and Matlock combined to throw 13 and a third innings of scoreless relief, with Matlock recording 13 strikeouts over a nine and a third inning stint.

Clay Weatherford had three hits and three runs batted in to lead the Mules offense that had 16 hits, but failed to cash in on several scoring opportunities in the extra innings. Overall, the Mules stranded 16 runners in the loss that snapped a five-game winning streak in NCAA post-season play, and a seven-game win streak overall, dropping the Mules record to 46-16 and sending them to an elimination round game against Shippensburg on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
