Special honors and a special award have been given to the Missourian who is the last known United States veteran of World War One in ceremonies in Kansas City..

Frank Buckles, a native of Harrison County, has received the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Gold Medal of Merit in ceremonies at the World War One Museum.

Buckles says he knew he would be among the longest-living survivors of the war because he has–as he put it, "feelings of longevity," but he didn’t know he would be the last of the doughboys.

Buckles is 107. He was an ambulance driver during the war. He lied about his age to get into the Army and rose to the rank of corporal during the conflict.

Highlights of the ceremony are on the Kansas City Star’s website, K-C Star-dot-com.
