Todd Wellemeyer gave the Cardinals a start they needed, limiting the Pirates to just one run as he pitched into the 8 th inning as the Cardinals won 5-1 last night at Busch Stadium giving up just two hits and three walks while striking out five.

Wellemeyer’s lone run came in the 8 th on a lead-off single and Randy Flores was called on in relief.   That runner scored as Flores and Russ Springer closed out the 8 th .  Jason Isringhausen pitched a 1-2-3 9 th in a non-save situation leading by four.

The Cardinal had only scored five runs once this month prior to tonight and didn’t score by hitting the ball particularly hard.  Troy Glaus had an RBI double and the Cards added their first run on a force-play.  In the 6 th , Brendan Ryan reached on an infield single, Brian Barton coaxed one through the infield and Rick Ankiel blooped a single.  Those three hits and two sac flies scored two more runs to make it 4-0 at that point for Wellemeyer (4-1).

Sometimes you need those type of games to get your offense rolling.  Back to Ankiel, he made a leaping catch over the wall to rob Adam LaRouche of a home run in the 2nd innings.  Watch it on stl.cardinals.com
