The Kansas City Royals edge the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 Saturday night at Kauffman Stadium for their second win in as many games against the visitors from north of the border. The victory was a big one for KC starter Luke Hochevar, who picked up his first Major League win.

The Royals missed out on an early opportunity to score when Tony Pena tripled with a man out in the bottom of the 3rd, but was cut down at the plate when David DeJesus grounded sharply to second and Aaron Hill nailed Pena at home.

Kansas City got on the board in the 4th inning when Mark Teahen led off with a double, moved to third on a Billy Butler fly ball to right field, and scored when Ross Gload smacked a line drive that deflected off the glove of a stretching Lyle Overbay at first base and went into right field for a single.

Toronto tied it up in the top of the 5th. With runners on the corners Alex Rios hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop Tony Pena, who lost the handle on the ball, allowing Gregg Zaunn to score from third.

The Royals took a 2-1 lead in the 6th when Jose Guillen led off with a towering home run to left field on a 2-2 pitch from Toronto starter and Excelsior Springs native Shaun Marcum.

The Blue Jays threatened in the 8th when they loaded the bases with 2 out. Adam Lind laced the ball to shortstop Tony Pena who made up for his error earlier in the game by snagging a sharp grounder and firing it to first for the out to end the inning.

Toronto knocked on the door one more time in the 9th when they put a runner on, but Joakim Soria closed the door on the Jays to seal the victory for the Royals.

Hochevar (1-1) pitched 6 innings for the win, allowing only 1 run on 6 hits, striking out 3 batters. Marcum (2-2) gave up only 2 runs in 7 innings to take the loss. Soria earned his 6th save pitching an inning of scoreless ball.

The Royals (11-13) and the Blue Jays (10-15) wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon at "the K." Gil Meche (1-3) goes to the mound for Kansas City against Toronto’s Jesse Litsch (2-1).
