The Cardinals and Brewers went extra innings and in the bottom of the 12th, Jason Isringhausen gave up a single and stolen base to Gabe Gross and the game winning single to Gabe Kapler.
The Cards tied it in the 9 th after Milwaukee botched a sure game ending double play ball hit by Albert Pujols with runners on first and third up 8-7. Pujols hit a ground ball to third, the relay throw from Rickie Weeks to Prince Fielder bounced in the dirt allowing the tying run to score off closer Eric Gagne.
The Brewers were up 4-3 in the sixth when Brad Thompson, in relief gave up four runs to put Milwaukee up 8-3. The Cardinals came back in the 7 th to score four and tie the game. Albert Pujols walked with bases loaded, but Ryan Ludwick struck out and the rally ended.
Jason Isringhausen gets tagged with the loss. Cesar Izturis came out of the game after he was hit by a pitch , so LaRussa had to make some odd shifts that included Albert Pujols playing second base.
