April 15th is not only the deadline to file 2007 income tax returns, it is the deadline for about 1.3-million people to collect about $1.2 billion in refunds going back to 2004.

Michael Devine, the Internal Revenue Service Media Relations Specialist for Kansas and Missouri, says those who are owed money from that year must file an income tax return by this year’s filing deadline or the money will forever go to the U.S. Treasury.

The IRS estimates that half of those who could claim refunds for 2004 would receive more than $552. These are mostly individuals who had taxes withheld but who did not earn enough money to be required to pay taxes or to file returns. An estimated 25,000 Missouri taxpayers have about $19.5 million dollars being held by the federal government.
