The State Senate has given final approval to SB 818 – legislation making changes to laws relating to stalking and harassment.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Rupp (R-Wentzville), basically expands the methods by which someone might communicate a “credible threat” or stalk someone to include cyber stalking and harassment. Current rules cover threats made in person, written threats, and those made during phone calls.

A “credible threat” includes one made with the intent to cause the person who is the target to reasonably fear for his or her safety, his or her family’s safety, and his or her pet’s safety.

The bill has now been sent to the House for its consideration.
