Pineiro Will Be Scratched From Sunday’s Start

Joel Pineiro Joel Pineiro felt some tightness in his shoulder and was shut down from a throwing session on Wednesday.  The team has decided to skip his scheduled start on Sunday as well.

Pineiro and the Cardinals are downplaying the issue.  Pineiro is saying he just couldn’t quite get warmed up on Wednesday.  He’s expected to throw in the bullpen again today, then appear in a game next week.

They may be absolutely right about this situation, maybe he’s rushing things a bit here in Spring Training, but when your shoulder tightens up a week into games, it’s not a good sign.  I’m not saying Pineiro is hurt, but keep an eye on that this spring.

Reyes Sharp In Opening Grapefruit Game

Reyes Trying To Get Back To 2006 Form The Cardinals started their Grapefruit League schedule with a 7-0 win over the Mets.  Anthony Reyes got an early leg up on the other pitchers battling for a spot in the starting rotation.  Reyes threw three innings, allowing two hits, while striking out one.

Juan Gonzalez made his debut with the Cardinals and hit two singles and picked up an RBI.  Troy Glaus also collected a hit as he went 1 for 3.  Skip Schumaker went 3 for 4 and played in left and right field.

While Schumaker may battle for the starting centerfield job, the defensive edge went to Rick Ankiel.  Showing flashes of Jim Edmonds, Ankiel tracked down a ball hit in the gap by David Wright, dove and as he hit the ground, the ball popped up out of his glove and Ankiel snagged it in.  The catch had his teammates talking about it after the game.

ON DECK:  If this were a regular season game, Friday’s matchup with the Mets would be quite intriquing.  Projected opening day starter Adam Wainwright will toss a few innings against newly acquired Johan Santana.

Blues Can’t Catch A Break, Lose Again

All of last night’s scoring in the Blues 2-1 loss to Phoenix happened in a three minute span of the first period.  The Blues continue to pepper opposing goalies, but yet have nothing to show for it.  They’ve scored just three goals in their last four games and have now lost five in a row.

Ryan Johnson Beats Bryzgalov Stick Side Ryan Johnson (Bill Greenblatt, UPI) got the Blues on the board first with a wrist shot in front of Coyote goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, 15:13 into the first period.  Ed Jovanowski and Niko Kapenen scored power play goals just :44 seconds apart just minutes after Johnson scored to give the Coyotes the 2-1 lead.

Phoenix has beaten the Blues nine out of the last 10 meetings, including all four this season. It is the first time in Coyotes franchise history they have swept a season series against St. Louis. St. Louis hasn’t beaten the Coyotes since April 3, 2007, at Phoenix.

Rams Waive Bruce, Frerotte

Isaac Bruce In moves to help get the Rams more than $15 million dollars under the salary cap for next season, they waived one of the team’s most popular player, 14 year veteran wide receiver Isaac Bruce.

The move was based solely from a financial viewpoint.  Bruce was scheduled to make $3 million dollars in base salary with a $2 million dollar signing bonus.  The Rams wanted to do away with the bonus and Bruce declined.

The Rams also let go of 14 year veteran Gus Frerotte who started three games in place of injured quarterback Marc Bulger last year.  Along with the restructuring of defensive end Leonard Little’s contract, it will allow the Rams that $15 million dollar surplus under the salary cap.

Time might be running out on your chance to be your own village

It takes the Missouri legislature to un-make a village law.

The way Missouri’s village law was passed last year is what has steamed several lawmakers and the state association of counties. House Speaker Rod Jetton put the provision into a big local government bill without going through the usual legislative process. It lets any individual petition to establish hisproperty, however large or small it might be, as a village–an area outside of county planning, zoning, or land use ordinances.

It has not gone unnoticed that Jetton friend Robert Plaster had his paperwork ready to go on the day the law went into effect, hoping to set apart his property on Table Rock Lake. The effort is now in court because the Stone County denied his petition.

Other counties are starting to see village petitions. Camden County has four of them, the most recent from a man who wants to turn his four lots into a village so he can use a small horse or a mule for weed control. He says he’s getting older and his knees aren’t what they used to be. Senate leader Michael Gibbons says that’s where the process is going if the law remains.

The Senate has approved a repeal of the so-called "Jetton’s Law" and has sent the bill to the House, where Jetton remains as the Speaker. But he has indicated a repeal bill would get a hearing. Although some legislators and county officials say the village law could lead to chaos in the counties, Jetton says the bill is good for economic development.
