Governor Matt Blunt (R-MO) has abandoned plan to unilaterally implement the Insure Missouri program which is designed to help tens of thousands of uninsured Missourians obtain healthcare coverage. He will, instead, work with the Legislature to gain the support needed to make the plan a reality.

A statement from the Governor says his office and the Department of Social Services have been involved in discussions with members of the General Assembly, adding those talks will continue. The goal is to reach consensus and begin implementation in the next fiscal year, which begins July 1st.

The proposal has run into opposition from some lawmakers, who expressed concern over the Governor’s attempt to make this plan a reality without the consent of the Legislature.
