The College Board’s fourth annual AP Report to the Nation finds more and more Missouri students are taking Advanced Placement – or AP Exams – and are succeeding at them.
In fact, 6.7 percent of Missouri’s public high school class of 2007 earned a grade of 3 or higher on one or more AP exams during high school – up from 6.2 percent of the class of 2006 and 4.7 percent of the class of 2002. Research shows earning a grade of 3 or higher on an AP Exam is a strong predictor of a student’s ability to earn a college degree.
Jim Morris with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) says these AP courses are administered by the College Board, which is perhaps best known for producing the SAT tests.
The report also shows Missouri has steadily been closing the gap for Hispanic/Latino and American Indian students since 2002. But black students in the state remain underrepresented among the AP student group experiencing success in AP.
