Pujols And Juan Gone Go Deep In Cards Win

Pujols and Juan Gonzalez Go Deep Against Mets Juan Gonzalez came to the Cardinals highly recommended by Albert Pujols.  In Juan Gone’s first at bat off of Johan Santana, he made Albert look like a genius.  He took Santana deep to left center with two on and two out in his first at bat of the spring.  Albert Pujols would add a solo shot in the 6th inning as well and the Cardinals beat the Mets 5-3, for their second time in as many days.

Adam Wainwright started for the Cardinals and gave up five singles and two runs over three innings of work.

Governor Asks For Federal Assistance for February Storms

Governor Matt Blunt (R-MO) is asking President Bush to approve a Disaster Declaration for Public Assistance for 18 Missouri counties as a result of the severe winter weather that hit southern regions of the state between February 10th and 14th.

The weather caused two storm-related traffic fatalities and more than 50 traffic injuries. It also led to the opening of shelters and warming centers in counties impacted by power outages.

Assessment teams identified more than $13.8 million in damages to public infrastructure in those 18 counties. If the request is approved, Public Assistance will reimburse jurisdictions for their eligible emergency protective actions, repairs, or replacement of damaged infrastructure and debris clearance.

The 18 counties are: Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Christian, Douglas, Greene, Madison, Mississippi, Ozark, Reynolds, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, Texas, Wayne, Webster, and Wright Counties.

Rams Kicker Wilkins Retires

After 14 years in the NFL, 11 with the Rams, K Jeff Wilkins will retire, the team announced today.

"Throughout my 11 years with the Rams, everybody in the organization has been fantastic from top to bottom," said Wilkins, "but my retirement is the best for me, my family and the Rams.  Over the years, the Rams have become my family.  I have been truly blessed to play this game for 14 years, and I have met some great players along the way that have not only been my teammates, but who have also become great friends.  I wish the Rams the best this season and seasons to come."

Wilkins finishes his career as the most prolific kicker in Rams history.  He is the Rams all-time leader in scoring with 1,223 points, leading the Rams in scoring for nine consecutive seasons (1999-2007).  He has made 307 career field goals, 265 as a Ram which ranks first in team history.  He also is the franchise leader in field goals, field goals attempted (328) and field goal percentage (80.8 percent).  Wilkins has made 39 of 50 field goal attempts from at least 49 yards and is 38 of 49 as a Ram.  His 78.0 field goal percentage from 49 yards or more is the best among active kickers with a minimum of 20 attempts, and the best in the NFL history among kickers with at least 25 field-goal attempts from 49-plus yards.

Billy Butler Trying To Find A Home In The Field

Baseball-KC-BillyButler.jpg Billy Butler can hit.  Wherever he’s played, he’s hit.  That’s never been the problem.  The problem for Royals manager Trey Hillman this spring is finding out if Butler catch?  No I’m not talking about the catcher position, I’m just talking about trying to catch!

The Royals signed Butler as a third baseman, but with Alex Gordon in the organization, no sense in keeping him there.  So they moved him to the outfield and he tried that for awhile.  Now this spring, they’re teaching him to play first base.

Does anyone else find it amazing that a 21 year old player can’t play the field? We’re not talking about a guy in his late 30′s who has bad knees and would be a liability in the field, so he needs to DH.  Butler is only four/five years removed from high school.  I may be missing something here, but how can a ball player who’s just getting his major league career started have diminished skills in the field, or no skills at all?  When I was growing up, playing little league, high school, pick up games in the neighborhood, wiffle ball, you name it, I was always playing in the field. I remember countless ground balls that would be hit in practices, the infield drills, the games of pepper, throwing the ball off of walls back at myself.  In the course of Butler’s last 8 years, he hasn’t had enough practice to field grounders, catch pop ups or fly balls, or scoop throws out of the dirt?

In a story on the Royals website , Butler said "I’m happy the way 2007 went for me.  I’d like to play a position and down the road, I wouldn’t mind being a DH later in my career. But I don’t think, as young as I am, I should be a DH or should want to be a DH."

At least he’s got the right attitude toward working on his fielding skills.  Whether or not he can pull it off will be an interesting story to watch this spring. Click on the link to hear Butler discuss why it’s important he learns to play first base.

Nomo Prepares For First Spring Appearance

Nomo's First Chance At A Comeback Today Against SD Hideo Nomo , the one time Japanese phenom pitcher with the Dodgers will be the Royals second pitcher today as he makes his spring debut this afternoon against the Padres.

The 39 year old Nomo hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2005.  Manager Trey Hillman says he’s looking for Nomo to spot his pitches well, much like he did in his last bullpen session.  Nomo has improved since the beginning of Spring Training, but still has a long way to go.

During one of the first days that pitchers and catchers reported, it was observed that Nomo was sweating profusely after completing a round of wind sprints on a particulary cool Arizona morning.  There were reports that Nomo looked a bit out of shape.

SICK BAY:  First baseman Ryan Shealy will unlikely play today.  He’s the latest Royals player to get hit with the flu.  The bug has been passed around the team quite a bit.  In fact, Luke Hochevar who threw well in the Royals Cactus League opener against the Royals threw up once he got back in the dugout after his two innings of work.

ON DECK:  The Royals take on San Diego today.  We’ll keep an eye on former Cardinal Jim Edmonds.
