Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Nixon (D-MO) is hoping the new session of the General Assembly, underway this week, will come up with property relief for Missouri seniors.

Under current law, a single taxpayer qualifies for the Property Tax Credit Program – or Circuit Breaker – at an annual income of $27,500. But married couples are eligible for the tax credit for a joint income of up to $29,500. Nixon calls the spousal exemption of $2,000 blatantly unfair. He’s calling on the General Assembly to support a property tax relief bill sponsored by Representative Clint Zweifel (D-Florissant).

Governor Matt Blunt (R-MO) says he wants to cut property taxes … and doubts Nixon has the willingness to do so. Blunt says Nixon wants to expand government and, by extension, increase the tax burden on Missourians.
