Virtual Driver Instruction To Be Offered

Missouri’s virtual school system is preparing to fill a major gap in Missouri high school education—with virtual driver education.

Missouri’s virtual school system went into operation this fall, offering classes through the internet to thousands of students who can’t get the things they want through their regular school. Among the new programs is one for next summer—driver education.

Curt Fuchs, who manages the program for the state education department, says the virtual program can’t put the students on the road. But it will provide the 32-hour book portion of driver’s ed. Fuchs says students who finish the book part of the course will have to line up their own instructors for the 28-hours of behind-the-wheel experience that goes with a school driver’s ed course.

He says many school districts don’t offer driver education because of high insurance costs. But he says Missouri ranks fifth in the nation in teenage driving deaths. Fuchs says it’s clear a lot of students could benefit from the program.

Fuchs says other states have found the virtual driver sed ucation course to be popular, especially in the summer when students can work full time and take the course in the evening.

Christmas Shopping Season Continues With Gift Cards

Christmas is over, but the Christmas shopping season is still on, thanks to one of the most popular items found in stockings this year – the gift card. Many of the large, medium, and small retailers throughout the state offer gift cards. Larry Whitely, Manager of Corporate Public Relations with Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, says these cards are becoming increasingly popular for gift givers and those on the receiving end.

Nathan Shore, Director of Public Relations for Macy’s Midwest – based in St. Louis – says that while most gift cards are redeemed within 60 days, most of the cards won’t expire for two years – and can be renewed at any time during that period.

As for how gift cards fit into the overall Christmas sales figures, financial analysts stress the fact that money spent on these cards do not count on retailers’ sales figures until the cards are redeemed and merchandise is moved out of the store. Those analysts estimate Americans spent about $29-billion on gift cards this holiday shopping season.

Teenager to Stand Trial as Adult in Shooting of St. Louis Police Officer

A circuit court judge in St. Louis has ruled that a 15-year-old accused of killing a St. Louis police officer should stand trial as an adult. Antonio Alexander Andrews, who is suspected in the August 15th shooting of rookie Officer Norvelle Brown, has been charged with first-degree murder and now faces the possibility of life in prison without parole.

In making the decision, Judge Thomas Frawley ruled the teenager is "beyond rehabilitation under the juvenile code."

Cardinals Among Many Of MLB’s Wild And Wacky From 2007

Jayson Stark, a writer for ESPN.com came up with a great look back at the 2007 MLB season.  The Cardinals were involved in some of his "wild and wacky" moments of 2007.  Here are some excerpts from the article found on ESPN’s website that I’ve linked for you.

You can’t beat Troy Percival’s year, can you? On Opening Day in Anaheim, he threw out the ceremonial first pitch (on the soon-to-be-disproved theory that he’d retired). But six months later, that very same Troy Percival was the Cardinals’ starting pitcher in the last game of the year. And by November, Tampa Bay had signed him to a two-year contract. Anybody see that coming?

Fab Four Dept.: The Cardinals scored in precisely four innings during their entire four-game series with the Padres, Aug. 6-9 — and still managed to win three out of four.

A Tale of Two Pitchers Dept.: While Brandon Webb was ripping off 42 straight innings allowing no runs, Mike Maroth went through a 42-inning stretch in which he gave up 53 runs. ?

Walk This Way Dept.: A free pass, huh? Tell it to the Cubs’ Ronny Cedeno. He got thrown out April 20 trying to advance from first to second on a walk . (Tried to steal. Overslid the bag.) Oops.  Note, that this happened against the Cardinals, Yadier Molina gunned Cedeno down.

Pettis County Youngster Gets New Heart for Christmas

A family from Green Ridge has received the best kind of Christmas present – a new heart for their four-year-old daughter. Clifton and Lena Billings and their daughter Olivia have been waiting for seven months for the call that finally came through on Saturday. A heart was available and within hours Olivia had the new heart and after some initial problems getting it beating, she is now resting comfortably in the cardiac intensive care unit at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Olivia had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which causes one side of the heart to get bigger to offset a weak muscle on the other side.

Green Ridge is in Pettis County, southwest of Sedalia.
