Bad news for the women’s basketball program at Southeast Missouri State. The NCAA’s Committee of Infractions has decided that the women’s basketball program should have wins wiped out from 2002-2003 through 2005-2006 season. This decision came in a letter that was written by the NCAA back in October and just released by SEMO. Also in the letter it states that there were numerous violations that were serious and intentional, included the direct involvement of the coach, were large in number, and included ineligible competition. The NCAA also decided to strike SEMO’s appearance in the 2006 NCAA tournament.
Senator Calls for Drug Tests for High School Athletes
State Senator Matt Bartle (R-Lee’s Summit) says the case of baseball player Barry Bonds is a reason to require all Missouri high school athletes to be subject to random drug tests. Bartle is introducing a bill for next year’s Legislature requiring that testing.
Bonds is suspected of using steroids. Bartle says people need to realize the issue extends beyond the professional level in sports.
Three Others Join Chase In N.Y. For The Heisman
We pretty much knew Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel would be invited to the 73 rd Heisman Trophy announcement. Now we know who will be joining him. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan, and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden will join Chase at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. You can watch it on ESPN at 7 o’clock, they’ll announce the winner around 7:50 our time.
Florida’s Tebow could be the first Sophomore to win the Heisman. Tebow ran for 838 yards and a Southeastern Conference-record 22 touchdowns. He’s also the nation’s second-leading passer, having completed 68 percent of his throws for 3,132 yards, with 29 touchdowns and just six interceptions in his first season as a starter.
Arkansas’ McFadden was the runner-up in last year’s Heisman. McFadden could become the fifth player to win the Heisman the year after being the runner-up, joining Tom Harmon of Michigan, Glenn Davis of Army, O.J. Simpson of USC and Herschel Walker of Georgia. McFadden started the season slowly while bringing up his numbers late in the season.
In the Warriors’ run-and-shoot offense, Brennan passed for 4,174 and 38 touchdowns. He also set the major college record for career touchdown passes with 131.
Daniel was one of six quarterbacks to reach 4,000 yards passing this season. He threw for 4,170 yards and 33 TDs.
I know most reading this won’t be happy with my decision, but I think Tebow will win and in fact become the first Sophomore to win the award. I don’t think McFadden has been consistent enough and in all honesty Brennan and Daniel are going to put up ridiculous pass numbers because that’s how their offense is set up. If you look at Tebow, he amassed almost 4,000 yards by throwing and running the football and he’s the second best passer in the country and led his conference in touchdowns.
LaRussa Blasts Rolen
Well, more fuel added to the fire between Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa and third baseman Scott Rolen. As baseball wraps up their winter meetings in Nashville, Tony LaRussa spoke about the non-trade of Scott Rolen saying the Cardinals will not trade Rolen just to benefit the player because he wants out. The Cardinals are going to do what’s best for the organization.
"It’s very clear that he’s unhappy. And I’m making it clear that I don’t know why he’s unhappy," La Russa said. "I can make a list of 50 respect points that this man has been given by our organization. It’s time for him to give back." LaRussa went on to say "He’s got a contract to play, and we need him to play. And he’s going to be treated very honestly. If he plays hard and he plays as well as he can, he plays. And if he doesn’t, he can sit. If he doesn’t like it, he can quit."
