Environmentally Friendly Buildings for the Birds? Not So!

Those environmentally friendly "green buildings" have been cropping up throughout the country in what is seen, for the most part, as a positive development. But there might be a downside for our fine feathered friends.

Ornithologists say millions of birds die each year through collisions with glass. And, since these environmentally friendly buildings are largely glass structures, the buildings have been described as a slaughterhouse for birds.

Kerry Cordray with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, says DNR’s recently constructed "green building" in Jefferson City has seen its share of bird deaths … but he doesn’t blame it solely on the building. He says it so happens that many of these buildings are constructed in areas where there are many trees … and birds.

The good news is that steps have been taken to deal with the concern. Cordray says leaf-looking decals have been installed on the windows of the Lewis and Clark Office Building, indicating to birds that the glass is a hard surface. He says the number of bird deaths at that building has dropped from an estimated 100 a year down to about 30 a year.

NW Missouri State To Appear On ESPN 2, In D-2 Semifinals

From Northwest Missouri State Athletic Department:  www.northwestbearcats.com

The NCAA announced late Saturday that Northwest Missouri State (11-1) and Grand Valley State (12-0) will meet in the national semfinals at 8 p.m. (CST) Saturday, Dec. 8, at Bearcat Stadium in Maryville. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

California (Pa.) hosts Valdosta State in the other semifinal at 11 a.m. (EST) Saturday. The two winners will meet Dec. 15 in Florence, Ala., for the national championship.

The Northwest Bearcats and Grand Valley State Lakers have each met in the previous two national championship games. The Lakers won both contests by a combined seven points, including a 17-14 win last season.

Northwest is the representative out of the Southwest Region following its 26-13 win at Chadron State Saturday. Grand Valley won the Northwest Region championship by beating Central Washington 41-21.

Chiefs Lose To San Diego 24-10

Defensive end Jarel Allen caught a touchdown pass in a goalline situation to give the Chiefs a 10-3 lead and from there it was all down hill as the Chiefs playoffs hopes (as bleak as they were to begin with) have all but ended as they fall to 4-8 on the year.

Damon Huard started at QB for the Chiefs, in place of injured Brodie Croyle, left the game in the 4th quarter with a hand injury.  He was picked off twice in the game.  Third stringer Tyler Thigpen picked off late in the game as the Chiefs turned the ball over four times.

LaDanian Tomlinson broke the game open in the 2nd half with touchdown runs of 31 and 28…it’s like high school runs.  How does a defense give up two long runs like that?

Missouri Ranked 7th in AP and Coaches Poll

The Missouri Tigers dropped to 7th in both polls with Ohio State and LSU grabbing the top two spots.  In fact the first 8 spots were identical.

Following in third was OU, Georgia, Virginia Tech, and USC, with Missouri one spot ahead of Kansas.

Missouri Headed To Cotton Bowl?

The Missouri Tigers had scheduled a press conference for this evening at 7pm.  That’s when the BCS Bowl Selection takes place.  A media alert went out early Sunday saying that the Tiger press conference was being bumped up to 6pm.

Meaning?  Missouri is out of the BCS Bowl bids.  Instead.  It looks as though Missouri will head to the Cotton Bowl.  No formal announcement has been made at this time.

My prediction:  Missouri vs. Florida on New Year’s Day in Dallas.
