Don’t Leave Health Habits Behind When Traveling

When you travel during the Christmas season, don’t leave health habits behind. Travel can be freeing, with a different routine, different places, and Dr. Samuel Stanley says it’s alright to lose your inhibitions, but you shouldn’t forget your routine health and safety habits.

Stanley is a medical researcher at Washington University in St. Louis. He has one piece of advice that he acknowledges if hard for people to follow:  relax. Stanley says travelers need to understand they must be flexible, because delays happen, problems arise, and plans don’t go as, well, planned.

Many people worry about germs, especially as they wait in long lines with other Christmas shoppers. They hear the coughs and sneezes and become concerned about colds. Stanley recommends washing your hands regularly. He says most viruses are passed along by contact, not through the air. Stanley also recommends getting a flu shot, which he says has been proven effective.

Common health habits need to be followed even in uncommon surroundings, such as hand washing. Also recommended by Stanley; if in doubt drink bottled water, don’t drink and drive, and wear your seat belts.

Kansas Going To BCS Orange Bowl…WHAT?

Just when I thought this BCS thing was working, I hear this about KU, while I’m eating my enchilada at Rio Rio Cantina in San Antonio before heading back to Missouri tomorrow.  I almost threw my margarita at the big screen!

How is it even possible that Kansas, 11-1 (the loss to Mizzou, no Big 12 north, no shot at a Big 12 Championship), 8th in the BCS Standings (two spots behind Mizzou) ends up playing in the Orange Bowl.  They had one of the weakest schedules in all of football!

Missouri beat KU, who was number two at the time, Nebraska, who was #25 at the time of the game, and Illinois who is playing in the Rose Bowl.

I just want someone to explain to me how that happens?  If you’re coming to this website expecting the sports guy to lay this out and make perfect sense to you…I’m sorry I can’t.  That’s really all I have to say.  I think I’ll go back to Rio Rio and have another margarita!

Mizzou Going To The Cotton Bowl

The University of Missouri football team has accepted an invitation to play in the 2008 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, as announced today by Mizzou and Cotton Bowl officials.

Head Coach Gary Pinkel and his 7th-ranked Tigers (11-2 overall, 7-1 in Big 12 and North Division champions) will play in the 72nd annual edition of the game, set for Jan. 1st in Dallas, Texas, against the 25th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks (8-4 overall, 4-4 and 3rd in SEC West). The game will kickoff at 10:40 a.m. (central) and will be televised nationally on Fox.

This will mark the first New Year’s Day bowl game for Missouri since the Tigers played in the 1970 Orange Bowl (Penn State 10, Mizzou 3), and it will be MU’s 10th alltime New Year’s Day bowl appearance. The Tigers will be making only their second appearance in the Cotton Bowl, with the other outing coming in 1946 (Texas 40, Mizzou 27).

Tomlinson Scores 2 TDs to Lead Chargers Over Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs gave it a good try, but just couldn’t keep it going for 60 minutes the San Diego Chargers topped the Chiefs 24-10 in an AFC West Division match-up at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs scored first as recently acquired place kicker John Carney connected from 38 yards out to cap a 6 play, 44 yard drive to give Kansas City a 3-0 lead.

The lead didn’t last long as San Diego’s Nate Kaeding sliced the uprights from 25 yards out to tie the score at 3. Kaeding’s field goal completed a 9 play, 63 yard drive. That’s how the 1st quarter ended.

In the 2nd quarter, the Chiefs jumped out in front as Jared Allen caught a 2 yard pass from Damon Huard to cap a 10 play, 64 yard scoring drive. Carney’s PAT made it Kansas City 10, San Diego 3.

But the Chargers struck back a little over 2 minutes later as Vincent Jackson gobbled up a 38 yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers to cap a 5 play, 51 yard drive. Kaeding’s conversion tied the score at 10 at the half.

San Diego took the lead for the first time in the 3rd quarter as LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 31 yards for a touchdown to cap a 4 play, 58 yard drive. Kaeding’s PAT made it San Diego 17, Kansas City 10. The quarter ended with the Chargers up by a converted TD.

In the 4th quarter, San Diego put the game on ice as Tomlinson scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, a 28 yard run to put the finishing touches on a 6 play, 80 yard drive. Kaeding’s extra point made it San Diego 24, Kansas City 10 for the final.

The next game for the Chiefs (4-8) is next Sunday, in Denver, against the Broncos.

Rams Win First Game at Home in Victory Over Falcons

The St. Louis Rams win their third game of the season in a 28-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons before a less than sellout crowd of 62,051 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. Quarterback Gus Frerotte fired three touchdown passes to lead the Rams to victory.

The Rams got on the board on their first possession as Randy McMichael grabbed a Gus Frerotte pass from 1 yard out to cap an 11 play, 75 yard touchdown drive. Jeff Wilkins kicked the extra point to make it Rams 7, Falcons 0.

St. Louis scored again the next time it got the ball, driving 95 yards in 6 plays to score a major. Frerotte fired a 31 yard pass to Torry Holt to finish off the drive. Wilkins again added the extra point, making it St. Louis 14, Atlanta 0. That’s how the 1st quarter ended.

There was only 1 scoring play in the 2nd quarter, and it was the Rams cashing in. Frerotte’s 8 yard pass to Isaac Bruce capped an 80 yard scoring drive in 6 plays. Wilkins’ extra point made it St. Louis 21, Atlanta 0.

In the 3rd quarter, the Falcons appeared to have scored a touchdown as Michael Jenkins ran back a Rams’ punt for a TD, but the return was called back by a penalty. Atlanta ended up settling for 3 as the National Football League’s all-time leading scorer gave the Falcons their first points of the day. Morten Andersen connected on a 41 yard field goal to end a 9 play, 61 yard drive and make the score St. Louis 21, Atlanta 3. The Rams led by that score as the teams went into the 4th quarter.

The Falcons struck just over 3 minutes into the 4th quarter as Chris Redman found Roddy White with a 15 yard touchdown pass to cap a 6 play, 80 yard drive. The conversion attempt was no good and the Rams led the Falcons 21-9. Atlanta scored again with just over 7 minutes to play as Redman found Jenkins for a 5 yard TD pass to cap a 7 play, 72 yard drive. Andersen’s extra point narrowed the lead to St. Louis 21, Atlanta 16.

The Falcons threatened as the game drew to a close, but a Redman pass with under 2 minutes to play was picked off by Oshiomogho Atogwe. It set up the final score of the day, a Steven Jackson 50 yard run for a touchdown to cap 2 play, 50 yard drive. Wilkins’ PAT made the final score Rams 28, Falcons 16

The Rams (3-9) get back into action next Sunday, in Cincinnati, against the Bengals.
