The two top contenders for the governorship have told the State Ethics Commission they’ll give back millions of dollars in campaign contributions. The money is donations that were over the state limits collected before the Supreme Court reinstated donation limits in July.

Governor Matt Blunt’s (R-MO) notice to the Ethics Commission questions whether the Commission’s order is fair. And Blunt says he’ll return his money if all other statewide candidates do the same thing. Blunt will have to return about $4.5-Million. Jay Nixon (D-MO) will have to give back about $1.3-Million.

After the give-backs, Blunt will have $1.5-Million and Nixon will have $1.4-Million.

Candidates who want to keep their money have to apply for a hardship exemption by next Monday. The Commission will then hold hearings.
