A former Republican state representative has decided against challenging Governor Blunt’s re-election bid, after mulling over a run for some time.
Former State Representative Jack Jackson (R-Wildwood) says he fielded call after call shortly after his close loss in the Republican Auditor’s primary in 2006, all urging him to run for governor in ’08. Jackson says he had to talk with Governor Blunt before deciding and after speaking with Blunt over coffee in the Governor’s Mansion Thursday morning, he decided against a run.
Jackson had edged close to making a bid for governor after commissioning public opinion polls that he says indicated he was within striking distance of Blunt. Jackson says the polls encouraged him, but Jackson says he now fully supports Blunt. Jackson might seek another state-wide office, but not governor.
Jackson says the polls indicate Blunt will have a tough time winning re-election over Attorney General Jay Nixon, the leading Democratic candidate for governor.
